The Rock Plymouth
What is The Rock
The Rock is a 12m high climbing wall with top roped climbing routes and a range of features including opportunities to boulder, traverse, lead climb and abseil.
For a small facility, there are lots of opportunities to develop as a climber.
Routes are varied in difficulty and reset on a regular basis keeping the wall and its challenges fresh for regular users.
We encourage climbers to bring their own harnesses, belay plates and rock shoes, but we do have some equipment (harnesses and belay devices) to enable those without equipment to join in.
We also have some specialist equipment supplied in partnership with www.equaladventure.org the UKs leading manufacturer and advocates for disability adventure sport, which enables us to work with people with a range of disabilities and include them in climbing.
Our Staff
THE ROCK has a professional staff team of climbing coaches and instructors, who hold high level qualifications in climbing and other adventure sports, who also receive additional training in first aid, inclusion, safeguarding and coaching for people with autism/ neurodiversity/ disabilities.
During our sessions our staff walk the floor and provide advice, instruction, and help with belaying, and managing safety. During our coached sessions the staff plan and deliver high quality climbing technique training, all the time looking to develop climbers performance.
Open Sessions- our Open Sessions are for experienced climbers to attend and climb freely with a partner or join up with other climbers to help with belaying.
Foundation Sessions- All beginner climbers are required to attend 2 foundation sessions where one of our coaches takes them through the basics of climbing safely: tying knots, fitting a harness, safe belaying, and basic climbing techniques.
Junior Sessions- Juniors are split into 2 age groups 5–12-year-olds, and 13–18-year-olds, these sessions are progressive performance based and fun sessions designed to improve the young people and make them more independent as climbers.
Group Bookings- Structured 1.5 hr sessions for groups (12), led by one of our instructors.
Volunteer Payback Scheme – Our ambition is to offer members the chance to volunteer at the facility in a range of roles (maintenance/ hold cleaning/ volunteer belayer/ assistant coach). For 5hrs of volunteering they can then attend the facility for free for the next calendar month! This way we can ensure that price is not the main driver of participation.
How do I book?
